Our Accomplishments
- Many of our patients failed to attend follow-up appointments. Their socioeconomic circumstances did not support a second or third follow-up, and their dwellings are in hilly areas; because we lacked home care and telephone assistance, these patients were left to handle at home. The low network connectivity in such terrain was a problem. A home care service was considered to guarantee effective palliative care for these patients.
- Home visiting services were compromised during the Covid-19 pandemic due to safety concerns and lockdown. But with the help of contact records, patients were tracked and were delivered with medicines and supportive drugs. In addition, the doctors regularly followed up through video and telephonic consultations, and caregivers were instructed on how they could manage illness at home.
- About 25 fatalities (hospital deaths plus home deaths) occur each month at the hospital, which admits 37% of all patients to the palliative care unit—13% to 15% of the patients we treat return with metastasis.
- Our existing palliative care nurses also received specialised training in managing palliative patients, pain administration, breathlessness, bedsores, fungating wound catheterisation, Ryles tube insertion, and ascitic tapping. In addition, we hired a small number of nurses and trained them internally. Following the establishment of this service, several patients were spared the bother of travel and were at peace as they approached the end of their life.
- In 2020, Savithrivani Trust began supporting palliative care. The hospital coordinates home care services and offers free medical attention and medication. However, providing home care services must continue in the long run, and we strive to assist every patient in need of palliative care.
- As of August 2021, hospital personnel had made 131 home visits this year. In addition, 94 palliative care patients receive frequent hospital staff visits for pain management and symptom control.
