Shibam Chandra Gosh, age 61, was born and raised in Amraghat, Cachar. Coming from a humble background, he grew up understanding the hardships of life. After marriage, he moved to Lalang village, where he set up a modest bicycle repair shop to support himself and his wife. Though they were never blessed with children, their companionship and shared journey became their greatest strength.

Over the years, Mr. Gosh developed habits of smoking and alcohol consumption. By 2023, he began experiencing persistent chest pain, a chronic cough, and troubling changes in his voice. Despite multiple visits to local doctors, his condition did not improve. Holding onto hope, he visited Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (CCHRC) on April 8, 2024. Here, his journey took a new path, as doctors conducted preliminary investigations and a biopsy, ultimately diagnosing him with buccal mucosa cancer.

To combat his illness, doctors recommended chemotherapy. Mr. Gosh received his first cycle on July 20, 2024, followed by a second on August 10. However, by the time his third cycle was due at the end of August, his condition worsened, and doctors shifted to oral chemotherapy. Understanding the limitations of further intensive treatment, the medical team recommended palliative home care.

CCHRC’s palliative care team stepped in to provide Mr. Gosh with the compassionate support he needed in his final months. Regular home visits ensured that he and his wife were never alone in their struggle. The team provided holistic care, addressing his medical, spiritual, psychological, and social needs.

In the heart of this care, Mr. Gosh and his wife found solace. Trained nurses managed his symptoms with dignity, counselors offered emotional support, and volunteers provided companionship, helping them navigate the challenges of this journey. The care extended beyond medical assistance—it became a source of comfort and strength for both Mr. Gosh and his wife.

Recognizing the financial challenges faced by families like the Goshes, CCHRC provided critical financial aid, ensuring they had access to necessary medications and services without additional financial strain. This assistance highlighted the profound impact of palliative care, not just on the patient but on the family as well, easing the financial burden during an already difficult time.

Counselors also worked closely with Mr. Gosh’s wife, offering guidance on coping with his loss and planning for her future after his passing. These sessions included employment and income planning, helping her build resilience for the road ahead.

Mr. Shibam Chandra Gosh’s story is a testament to the power of compassionate, comprehensive care at every stage of life. From providing medical treatment to supporting emotional and financial well-being, CCHRC stood by Mr. Gosh and his family in their time of need.

His journey reminds us of the importance of palliative care—offering dignity, comfort, and peace when it matters most.
