In the small village of Chiparsangan in Hailakandi, lives 20-year-old Abjol Hussain. Born into a humble, middle-class family, Abjol is the eldest of four siblings. His father, a daily-wage worker in a mine, and his mother, a homemaker, have worked tirelessly to provide for their children. Wanting to lighten his father’s burden, Abjol started working at a company to contribute to the family’s modest income. As the eldest son, he carried his responsibilities with pride, always striving to support his siblings and ease his family’s struggles.

One day, Abjol experienced severe abdominal and back pain. He first sought relief at a local pharmacy, but the pain soon returned. Concerned, he visited a doctor, who recommended an ultrasound and additional tests. The results revealed the need for surgery, which he bravely underwent. Though he was discharged soon after, life took a difficult turn when he began experiencing swelling and pain in his lower body.

The local doctor referred him to Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (CCHRC) in Silchar, where he received a devastating diagnosis—metastatic germ cell tumor, a form of testicular cancer. Chemotherapy was advised, but Abjol and his family were forced to decline due to financial limitations and the challenging journey from their village to the hospital.

As months passed, his condition worsened. He returned to CCHRC with severe abdominal swelling and pain. The medical team provided supportive care, understanding the family’s hardships, including their limited resources and poor road conditions. Realizing their struggles, the hospital arranged for regular home visits to ensure Abjol received continued care.

The home care team visited Abjol in his family’s small mud house, where he lay with abdominal swelling, edema, and reduced kidney function. Despite his pain, his biggest concern remained his family. He shared his sorrow with the team, expressing how much he wanted to keep supporting them, knowing they relied on him. His parents and siblings stood by him with unwavering support, though he worried about their future without him.

Today, Abjol’s story is a testament to the strength and sacrifices families make in the face of life’s most difficult battles. The CCHRC home care team continues to visit him weekly, offering comfort and assistance to him and his family. In times of need, every act of compassion and support makes a difference.
