Donation
has been the principal source of financial resource of
this philanthropic and charitable society. Day labourers,
students, workers, employees, cultivators, professionals,
businessmen, planters, youth and women organisations,
social activists, banks, private and public enterprises
and other generous individuals came forward to make
donations in cash or kind and made it a people’s
project. Infrastructure so far developed in the hospital
has come to this stage due to sincere and kind donation
received from them only. Our patrons, particularly our
Chief patron Sri Santosh Mohan Dev, M.P. & Union
Minister, helped much in getting financial assistance and
donations from some public enterprises and corporate
bodies.
Donors are exempted from
income tax under section 80G of Income Tax Act, India.
Also, the society is permitted to accept foreign
contribution under Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act,
1976.
The
hospital was established in 1996 by the vision of a group
of social workers drawn from different professions who
formed The Cachar Cancer Hospital Society (CCHS).
The society now has nearly 75 members.
The
objectives of the hospital are:
-
To
develop the Cachar Cancer Hospital into a
comprehensive cancer centre and state of the art
tertiary level referral offering treatment to all
irrespective of the patient’s socioeconomic status;
-
To
develop educational programmes for medical and
paramedical personnel in the various subspecialties of
oncology;
-
To
contribute to basic and clinical research and to get
involved in multicentre trials
The
need to establish a comprehensive cancer care facility in
the region assumes greater importance in light of the fact
that 5 of the eight national cancer registries in the
region have recorded incidence rates of well over the 100
per 100,000 population from urban registries in other
parts of the country. Mizoram state records 194.5 (AAR
in males) and 155.7 (AAR in females) cases per 100,000
population while Kamrup district in Assam records 172.2
and 154.1 (AAR in males and females respectively) per
100,000 population. Large parts of the region are as
yet not accessed by registries. Cancers of the Head
and Neck, oesophagus, stomach gall bladder, lung, female
breast and uterine cervix are the commonest with some
regional variations. About 50% of cancers in males
and 30% in females are tobacco related cancers.
Accomplishment
of these objectives, with the larger objective of
full-fledged cancer care in the Northeastern region would
need development of human resources, establishment of
departments and purchase of equipment. The plan for
the next 5 years is:
