Silchar, the nerve centre of the southern part of North-Eastern Region of India stands on 92.510 E longitude & 24.50N latitude at a height of 114.68m above sea level. It is linked to the rest of country by road, rail and air.

Silchar has about 5 lakh (0.5 million) population in town and its suburb. There exist a Govt. Medical College, a National Institute of Technology, a Central University, Govt. Polytechnic, Govt. B.Ed. College and a host of other educational and professional institutes.

 

Road Link:
  • Cachar is connected by road with Guwahati via Jowai-Shillong.It is the only road link direct from Guwahati and linking the rest of the world.

  • The Jawai Badarpur road also connects Mizoram,Tripura and part of Manipur.

  • The Silchar Imphal road connects Cachar with Manipur via Lakhipur,Jiribam - Nongbah.

  • The Silchar Haflong road connects Haflong ,Lumding and other parts of Assam.S

Rail Link: The railway network touches important places of Barak Velley.Due to growth of Tea plantation in Barak Velley,railway networks in early 1900 AD.The Lumding Badarpur section of NF Rly is the most vital link of Cachar Mizoram and Tripura with the rest of the country.The line is built up through the zig-zag hilly terrain of North Cachar Hills passing through 36 tunnels with great engineering skill.
Air Service: Cachar District has its own Airport at Kubhirgram which is approx. 30 K.m. away from Silchar Town, which serves as the major communication link point for the people of Cachar. The Air Service operates flight services in the route Silchar-Imphal (7 days, One flight in a day), Silchar-Kolkatta (7 days, 2 Nos flight on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday and 1 flight on the Other day) and Silchar-Guwahati from this airport.
